Naturally, I am a diehard Mike Campbell fan, who isn’t? I saw him perform this summer with that other well-known band when they played outside of Houston, about two weeks before Hurricane Ike caused major damage to the amphitheater where they had played. Since I had first row tickets, I was sure happy Ike didn’t form two weeks earlier. I have to admit that just in case we had to evacuate, I slipped the pick he handed me at the concert into an envelop and placed it right in the middle of the insurance papers, passport, social security card and family photo albums.

Standing in that front row of that concert, I couldn’t take my gaze away from his hands. They moved across the strings like water flowing over rocks, gliding smoothly until they caused a big splash, when his pick would fly through the air like a horny salmon. He was playing notes I had heard thousands of times before, but that had never sounded better.

It is amazing how live music can make a person feel so alive. While the wind pounded our roof during Hurricane Ike, sounding like Stan Lynch on steroids, I kept thinking about the concert, and wondering what kind of riff Campbell could have gone off on with that major percussion work going on in the background – I bet it would have been amazing.

Oh well, hope that if I come to see these guys in California that there won’t be an earthquake – I don’t think I could take another natural disaster.
